Reviews:
From melodrama to strong film. The Cool Lakes of Death has become a
brilliant film wrapped in the fascinating, beautiful and always very
functional photography of color magician and creator of atmospheres Theo
van de Sande. The film is also pristine in sound and beautifully
decorated, which is reflected in the endearingly rustling costumes. -
Algemeen Dagblad
This new film gives Renee Soutendijk the status she deserves, namely
that of the Netherlands' most important film star. She gave shape to
Hedwig's complicated character with a rare amount of talent. The change
from a frail young lady to a completely run-down morphine whore has been
cleverly designed by Renee Soutendijk. The further (19th century)
decoration of the film and clever construction of the story make The
Cool Lakes of Death a wonderful film. So rightly applause for Nouchka
van Brakel. -Het Vrije Volk
A sample card of ingenuity, diligence and vision. A film that can
keep a large audience thinking and make them think, an intelligent
director who has something to say, a brilliant cameraman with light
magic, a technical sample of some thrift and diligence, and an actress,
who works entirely on her own strength to become an international star.
